right when the topic of god started to become too much she started writing about it with doubt and questioning, which i appreciate as someone who was raised christian and then deconstructed. i dont think she will deconstruct though so im curious to see how her questions about religion unfold

The writing was so overdone at first like I expected, but it’s gotten much better, it feels more natural now. The Christian influence doesn’t feel too extreme either, there’s only some sections that seem like she’s putting it in there JUST to talk about God more. I’m interested in her story but not much has really happened and there’s not much building to any certain event

I go into every memoir with very low expectations, its easy for people to want to glorify or romanticize the storytelling when they write their own stories. I rarely feel like it’s authentic despite that the point of memoirs as a genre is to feel the authenticity. But the fact that this one leads Christian worries me. I want to read more African American stories, so if you’ve got recs, hmu

it’s not at ALL that this book is bad, i think it just doesn’t resonate with me. it hasn’t CLICKED. i have no reason to dislike it: it’s well written, a beautiful story of which i’ve learned throughout my life, and hits things i value in life and in a book. but somehow it’s just not clicking. im not enjoying this the way i want to enjoy it.
