this is probably the most acerbic acidic book i've ever read everyone in this literally hates each other i understand like 60% of what's going on at every given time i love it here so much. more hateful & jaded & lowkey unlikeable transfeminine protagonists pls... the monster self-referral is a bit much tho like sure u a brick but it's not the end of the world.

this is annoying me bc like. there's a story about a white girl and her boyfriend. why are you making it such a big deal. why am i reading a story abt a white girl her annoying friends and her boyfriend. if i wanted to see that i could js go outside this isn't what i signed up for

really enjoying this so far !! the story i'm about to finish is probably my favourite; i have so much compassion for its mc. the decision not to use quotation marks might've been a dealbreaker for some people, but i don't mind it especially; the subject matter intrigues me more than enough.

pausing for the moment because this is *also* doing nothing for me. i find the prose too disjointed; i don't see anything of that originality everyone loves to rave about

i have, of course, encountered sentences that ring true & highlighted them, but outside of that this is doing nothing for me

not really enjoying how this implies, or rather fails to dissect, how girlhood is linked w/ anatomy. i expected the author to play around with gender more, but her refusal to probe what it actually means to be a girl leaves her work feeling lackluster, at least for me.

love love love so far ! an excerpt from my reading journal entry: her heroines are either born strange or become strange, but they all don't realize it at the beginning. they end their stories fully enmeshed in their strangeness. their stories are a drawn-out hatching; a slow stripping of their societally imposed personas to reveal their "true" natures, whether inborn or acquired within the course of the exposition.

very interesting & slightly incomprehensible so far. skipped the introduction and the dedication (half-way) which take up a sizable chunk of the beginning. the writing is very symmetrically paradoxical and i might have 2 read this slower to figure that out. not a very big fan of the narrator who seems chauvinist. love the cover of my edition

this has been bizarre yet boring. can't understand the writing; it's certainly novel, but at what cost ? i find jeanette's sophisticated references amusingly endearing and the confusion it inspires in those around her hilarious though, so it does have it moments. if it doesn't get any better soon i'll prob dnf

not really enjoying this so far. it isn't anything particularly novel, and it has this strangely outside-looking-in tone towards its one black woman side character. isn't the mc supposed to be black ? plus, world-building wise, wouldn't it make sense to have atl a few fat bloodmaids ? i'm not a big fan of the dynamic between the mc and her li too. still, we'll see where this goes

buddy read with the lovely pierce and i have to say i am eating this UPPPP omg <333 it's making me reconsider whether i even enjoy litfic tbh.... it's been quite a while since i read a romance novel and i wonder if i've been starving myself for intellectual prestige

this strongly reminds me of helen oyeyemi's the icarus girl, the mc & sheri meet and interact in a strikingly similar way to the two main girls of book, down to the abiku mythology featured in mc's story. also the writing's sharpness keeps pleasantly surprising me and making me laugh out loud

thoroughly intriguing, although somewhat boring
