It’s a good book, but I can’t help but notice some of the wording and how it contributes to an unconscious bias — phrases like “black men” to represent the ring wraiths and calling Mordor “the shadow of the east,” as if east is kind of just inherently evil. LOTR really is the fantasy blueprint, but not always good. Just some thoughts so far.

So I’m getting a really weird feeling about this book. Idk if I’m reading too much into this, but the garden cheating scene, immediately followed by the bath scene are reminding me of the article about Gaiman’s assault against babysitters/nannies. Again, maybe I’m reading too much into it but I feel like there are a lot of similarities between these scenes and the description of his actions from the article.

Enjoying this more than I expected. Plenty of parallels between this play and Macbeth to keep me content :)

Not even a quarter of the way into this book and I’ve cried like four times. Goddamn.

Extremely cold. Characters have no deeper personality. Nothing makes them sympathetic. Boring, tough-guy story without emotion. I just don’t care about any of it.

This kind of sci-fi, aside from being a male-centric tough-guy fantasy, is unbearably cold. The main character is a caricature of violent masculinity, lacking personality and interest. What am I supposed to like about him? His violence? His overt maleness, which seems to depend in part on his violence and in other part on his sexuality, which is essentially just lust for young (vaguely teen-looking) women. Boring.

Just documenting this now bc it’s annoying me but… she’s looking down the sight of the shotgun?? To aim it?? And when she shoots, the shell hits her target??? Bro google is free.

Oh my god stop fucking closing one eye to aim your shotgun this is literally going to kill me. I get it we’re being vulnerable and romantic but I need y’all to know enough about guns to not give me an aneurysm while reading.

Y’all we can’t keep doing this. So far good, but it’s clear this author knows little about guns and has a lot of incorrect info. I can’t keep reading books where the authors write about things I know about wrong. Someone help.
