I am reading an ARC and I thank Simon & Schuster Canada as well as the author Emily Austin for sending me this copy. It took me a few pages to warm up to Gilda, the main character but I am now enjoying her zany character and empathising with her neurotic behaviour. She seems to be a 'one step forward and two steps back' kind of girl. Last evening I found myself laughing out loud (I admit it, even snorting).

I'm reading this thanks to my friend Gillian. The various blurbs on the jacket make me wonder if I will be able to finish this as the tension might be too much for me. For now I am finding it very engrossing.

I am enjoying reading this book both for the subject matter, the pearl industry, as well as how completely new the situation of the main character is to me. Vera is 13 when the story opens and is expecting her grandfather to arrive on a ship from Japan. Vera's mother has recently died and she has managed by herself until now. Unexpectedly, he arrives with a much younger Japanese Ama woman. How will this work out?

I am really enjoying this fast paced police-procedural. Although about solving the murders of two teenagers and breaking up a scheme to lure teens into prostitution, there is more about the intricacies of detection work and the interplay between individuals at different levels in the police hierarchy. It is set in Bradford, Yorkshire. (started on June 27 not 28)

Jann is on page 88 of 272 of The Burning House : Unlocking the Mysteries of the Brain
The early chapter on how the brain actually works involving neurons and synapses, etc. was heavy going for me but they set the stage for the various problems which occur after a person has a stroke or other brain injury. It is now much easier for me to understand what actually happens when some brain cells die and how their location in right or left hemisphere determine the resulting impaired function.

Jann is 40% done with Russian Roulette (Dev Haskell Mystery, #1)
To adapt a quip my Dad used to use: If I never read another Dev Haskell detective book it may be too soon. Well, maybe I will because I got them free. The plots catch me as I am curious to find out what happens but Dev's casual one night stands irritate me as well as his wise cracking. Maybe they are guys' books. I see above that the author has been compared to Carl Hiassen - I don't think he is in the same league.

Jann is on page 28 of Ee by Gum, Lord!: The Gospels in Broad Yorkshire
I am enjoying this book very much as (per its title) it is written in Broad Yorkshire, which is the dialect of the English county where I was born. For the same reason I am taking it slowly as it uses phonetic spelling. When I was a child I was discouraged from using this dialect and told to use the 'King's English' but these days it is acknowledged to be part of the Yorkshire heritage.

I had expected this to be of a far more revelatory nature however I am definitely enjoying reading about each woman's personal story or anecdote.
