Why is this story so tragic :(

Just finished reading about the 1982 Hama massacre, subhanAllah I had no idea it was this horrific :( may Allah have mercy on the shuhadaa and elevate their ranks in the akhirah.

He laid out the succession plan that was to include Bashar’s promotion to army commander. “Your support means that all your privileges will remain intact. Those who have any objections, please leave now through this door,” said Mustafa pointing to a back door he often used. Mustafa had posted soldiers outside the door and instructed them to kill anyone who came out. No one did.
