Cameron also makes a lot of dumb decisions, enough that it crosses the boundary from the realm of charming and sympathetic to irritating.

Any conversation Sir Cameron has is so frustrating to me. I know that people and therefore fictional characters quite often don’t say what they mean, but in this novel it feels like almost every interaction is thoroughly unsatisfying.

I don’t think Tam deserves Nikolau. I’m in his head so I am sympathetic to him, but he’s using Lyford like a punching bag. If Lyford left him alone I would not root for Tam to get him back.

See, this is what I mean—having examples of what Lyford had said would have allowed me as a reader to sympathize with Tam more. Instead, I’m just taking Lyford’s word about how Tam has been unfair.

Wait, he still hasn’t apologized?

- His hatred for him feels a little hollow. It would help if we could learn more about his complicated feelings towards Lyford so that we can better understand how and why he has convinced himself to hate Lyford despite how thoroughly he wants him.
