brilliant lunatic

Not half bad

Gritty and dirty and vibrant and clean and sharp and wise. One of the best written books I’ve read. It earned that Pulitzer.

Liberal use of racial slurs notwithstanding, it’s a surprisingly engaging book so far. Vivid imagery, cutting use of other rhetorical devices to convey its themes and ideas, and some funny, engaging characters I find myself rooting for.

That infancy section at the beginning is a fever dream but it’s come together now

Imagery could be more vivid and it’s not at all subtle with its Christianity but not bad

Author vastly overestimates the depth of their own insight. I hope the disparity between estimation and reality narrows over time.

Garbage quality prose, disgusting and depraved content and framing. This book is a crash course in how not to write fiction. It makes me sincerely hope to never meet the author.

GOD, it’s so good. It’s SO good. It’s like a fine red wine, dry and tannic and imperial in flavor

I hate it but this is easily in top 5 books ever read. It might be #1

Gay

It’s so incredibly pretentious and yet so witty and aphoristic.

Despite the slightly dry ‘40s-50’s style of writing, this book’s central argument seems among the most prophetic statements of the 20th century.

Awesome, truly.

I mean it’s Hemingway

Hemingway is excellent at conveying the mind numbing shock and terror and horror of the battlefield. Very creative prose, rule-breaking prose that I don’t really have a comparison for.

Simultaneously vivid/beautiful & dry as an old, salty cracker.

Like a sourdough saltine.

Also the main character is a misogynistic dickwad but I guess this was the 1910’s, right?

This novel is single-handedly elevating my hopes of getting published, just by virtue of its own lackluster quality

Ugh. Yuck. It just keeps getting worse

The romance is pretty rushed and feels a bit contrived. Lore is interesting but derivative. Dialogue feels stilted and overly-packed full of information to advance the plot.

But the vision is there
