It’s so funny to get 90% of the way through the book and have it say “and so ended Nelly’s story” like jesus christ did he not have anywhere to be?

Predictably loving, ugh. Unfortunate to immediately find this style popping up in my little morning writing exercises but WHATEVER

A woman says “sometimes you have to put two and two together,” explaining why her man got gunned down.

Detective (retired) says “sometimes it equals four, sometimes it’s .22”

Hell yeah

Voyeuristic. Someone telling you a story where they don’t realize how they’re coming off. Want to hear more so not interrupting, but they keep talking about how they’re seeing things clearly for the first time, and you’re thinking the whole time “damn you do not seem ok”

Kinda fascinating to invent the characters of the underworld like this, like their distinct personalities. Also have not thought about this enough to say anything intelligent, but the idea that sin/evil is an inherent element of the laws of heaven or the universe, not something springing from God’s laws. Like, what makes bad bad in this story?

Self important in cool way, kinda needs to be

Loved the character vignettes so far. This latest chapter (Patricia Westerford) is getting on my nerves a little with how it depicts scientific peer review (are we supposed to take for granted she’s right?). Anyway, pausing while I wait for the audiobook to be available again from the library

Got through a third of the audiobook on my run just now. Is she still out of fashion? Or is asking if Zadie Smith is out of fashion out of fashion? Probably my favorite current writer, whatever she thinks of cancel culture, and this writing rocks so far.

Wondering if this is a foundational “millennial autofiction” (hell yeah SEO) that others have tried to copy. Not much happening, a lot of internal thoughts and snide cynicism that is not that original or funny, can’t tell if that’s an intentional character trait of the narrator. Or maybe it’s because I’m reading this six years late. Still very compelled to keep reading, in spite of it not being my thing.
