The fact that Glorfindel (hero of Gondilin, balrog-killer, an absolute dawg) is basically dropped from the team in favor of Pippin Took going might be the craziest bit of lore that I have ever learned about LOTR.

It's legitimately shocking that the Japanese did this stuff to PoW's and no one really knows. It's their own version of Concentration Camps. Crazy.

I can't explain why...I'll try to diagnose it in my review, but even though the story is interesting I have no problem putting the book down. I'm never wishing I had more dishes to clean or a longer drive just to read more.

Low-key Hadrian is easily as much of a jerk as Crispian. I dunno if that's a hot take, but it is my take.

I'm all for fake and even hypocritical religions in fiction. Like go for it, I get it. I just think it's dull when it's obvious no one, even at the highest level, or at any point in its history, believed in it. Religions like that are just very rare, arguably non-existent in human history.

Same problem I have with the Bene Gesserit in Dune. It's a ploy up and down. It needs someone who believes it to "feel real."

Summary so far:

Hadrian Marlow's character doesn't like, want anything, he's kinda just, around. And he has a crush on someone.
