“Oftentimes people say, well, if it takes that long, I’ll be dead. So what? Everybody dies, right? […] we have to learn how to imagine the future in terms that are not restricted to our own lifetimes.”

“Incidentally, if you are a white man, you don’t necessarily have to identify with that collective “white men” about which I am speaking.”

“Most importantly if the intersectionality of struggles against racism, homophobia, and transphobia is minimized, we will never achieve significant victories in our fight for justice.”

“[…] we [will] have to rewrite the whole category, rather than simply assimilate more women in to an unchanged category of what counts as “women”.”

The small nonfiction selection on Sudan at my library is all published before 2011.. using this book anyways as a starting point for vocab/names and to compare to current day attitudes.

Fascinating how often the words and thoughts of Angela Davis have crossed my mind while reading these first few sections. Our struggles are truly interconnected!!

LOVE to see Davis including trans women in her feminism.

In the true nature of intersectionality, Davis mentions multiple groups, struggles, and movements before coming back to Palestine. So, just one quote for thought:

"Before Palestinians are even arrested, they are already in prison. [...] one can be transferred from an open-air prison to a closed prison."

Prison abolition and "defund the police" have never been clearer to me.

Hard to choose just one but quote for thought: "if we assume that there must be an identifiable racist [...] who is the perpetrator, then we won't ever succeed in eradicating racism"

Reading just now, at the end of 2025, about the need to bring global awareness to the conflict in Palestine from a 2014 interview with Davis truly makes me feel like I've been asleep this whole time. 2026 might just have to be my year of nonfiction.

Lestat’s travels and the variety of vampires he encounters are reminding me of just how isolating Louis’ early vampiric days were 😭😭

This retelling was so faithful I almost got bored until the most insane deviations possible happened. Worth the read :D Wish the creature’s story was a little more detailed 3
