I got a lot out of this book but that being said I think I need to read about 3 books by women to recover from how irritated this man made me

The cosmic justice of him having 6 daughters will never not make me smirk

I’ll be reading and enjoying this book just for him to go on a paragraph-long sidebar of thinly veiled misogyny and it makes me wonder if that was necessary like at all

The Hajj sounds so cool I wish I was invited (I mean this foremost in a genuine way but cannot deny its quippy connotation)

It’s so funny that this old man had one job: to follow his own religion’s codes of morality. Namely no substances and no adultery. & he couldn’t even manage that. And Malcolm talks about how weak women are by nature. Maybe rethink that ???

We really are social creatures. And religion really is a cheat code for community (not inherently a good or bad thing)

I particularly enjoy how you get to know who he used to be, paired with the person he became, and how those two things often were at odds with each other. I will say, though, chapter 6 reminded me that he’s still just a man. Threw in a random comment ab women being weak & looking to find strength in a man. Like ok🫠not radical enough for me in that respect
