Marx’s mums name is Anna Lee too… and sam just found out. after nearly a decade. he’s not going to make it is he?

Marx is my favourite character, if anything happens to him i don’t know what i’ll do. I can’t believe how of hairs i was caught though. genius plot twist.

Zevin now referring to sam as the ‘mayor of mapletown’ instead of the former, makes me feel a certain type of way. but i’m not sure exactly how it makes me feel yet. good or bad.

‘you can’t be serious, sadie. people hate shakespeare. people hate history. and the world your proposing is so dark. what are you trying to prove?.’ Mazer probably wouldn’t like me. sam might’ve though.

‘tell me i don’t know you, sam thought. tell me i don’t know you when i could draw both sides of this hand, your hand, from memory.’

what just happened?! sam knew about the handcuffs and didn’t do or say anything? sadie was struggling with trauma caused by an abortion that happens at the beginning of the book, that we don’t even know about? all the characters are keeping secrets from me & it’s genius.

sam did know? i thought sadie was overthinking but he actually knew… what a betrayal.

basing the main character in both sides on alice and her cancer and even using her actual name, with the character being called ‘alice ma’, and then calling her alter ego ‘rosie’ and making her omnipotent and in the ‘better’ side of the game feels so wrong to me. like it doesn’t even feel like a tribute at all it makes me so uncomfortable for some reason. as if it was just convenient for marketing.

i adore the fact that in this story zevin let’s us into the world so deeply we get little pockets of perspective from everyone. even the nurse on the hospital ward in this instance. it’s making regular third person narrative seem shallow. like she’s created a new fourth perspective.

chapter eight is genius. up there in my collection of chapters from the few books i’ll think about often. poor anna lee.

when i found out the roommate was called ‘Marx’ i loved it because i instantly went ‘Karl Marx’ but quickly realised there is probably absolutely no relation between those two facts.
