This is a brilliant and insightful work (so far).

His analysis of the issues facing Modern man have undoubtedly been proven true with time. One of the great challenges the church faces is the tension between orthodoxy and relevancy. Until we understand our cultural milieu we don't have a dog in the fight. Thank God for Henri Nouwen and those like him.

So far I'm more interested in the Mercersburg school generally. Though this work is a fascinating read epitomised by the following claim:

“These waves of revivalism shifted the centre of gravity of the Christian life away from the church’s gradual nurture to the sudden transformation of the individual’s heart.”

Nevin's defence of the Heidelberg (and catechetical instruction more generally) beings beautiful balance

This book is beyond brilliant. It is no surprise that this book is an absolute must read for everyone interested, not only in spiritual direction, but in prayer, the inner life, and a healthier walk with God.

Will re-read in perpetuity I think.
