Ah so this is what Ready Player One was trying to be.

I wish I was enjoying this more. The particularly 1920s-1940s-British-fantastical writing style reminds me a bit of the Gormenghast trilogy which also left me feeling emotionally removed.

Immediately great writing. Refreshing.

“Now then, thought I, unconsciously rolling up the sleeves of my frock, here goes for a cool, collected dive at death and destruction, and the devil fetch the hindmost.”

“So, in his inclement, howling old age, Ahab’s soul, shut up in the caved trunk of his body, there fed upon the sullen paws of its gloom!”

I had forgotten how funny this is.
