two takeaways so far:

1) Palestine was not an “empty, arid land” but a thriving Arab society with language + culture (Jews est to be 2-5% of population in 1878)
2) zionism was originally a minority opinion among Jews. it was the British (aka powerful white men) that pushed Zionism, an ideology rooted in anti-Semitism and colonial strategic interests, to convince Jews they needed to “return to their homeland”
