Fascinating account of the lives of these two actors who pushed every boundary imaginable. I adored Burton and, as a teenager. took myself to the movies to see everything he was in. I had no idea he was a drunk. Or such a drunk. I never saw Cleopatra. They couldn't have had more different upbringings.

Absolutely rivetting.

Wow. I can't believe I haven't read this. What an eye opener. Should be compulsory reading for all Australians.

Hard to believe that the writer of this went on to write Animal Farm and 1984. It's a really good, if depressing read, but is very naturalistic in style. Encouraging for all of us.

Masterpiece.

This isn't an easy read but, then again, nor is Moby Dick. Patrick White's mastery of language is something to behold, when you can decipher it. His characters are rich and the setting detailed. You do get a sense that White didn't love these people but they are so beautifully drawn you can't stop reading about them.
