I'm really struggling to make headway with this one. The preceding short stories really hooked me with their worldbuilding, but so far this reads as a pretty mundane police procedural with a few extra interpersonal problems. There's not much you could change to make the setting matter less. Like, I just put the book down part-way through a chapter because I was bored by and frustrated with both characters; yeesh.

I have been considering DNF'ing this practically since I started. The only thing that's kept me pushing forward is the undeniable momentum of an audio book. I really enjoyed Microserfs, and this book feels like it wants to share in that same kind of corporate observational comedy; but everything and everyone are intentionally frustrating, and I don't know how much more of that I can take.

I'm really struggling to not DNF this. The whole book so far is a clear setup for a massive “social media bad” conclusion at its end, and the author seems delightedly self-satisfied with this. And watching the impossibly unaware characters toddle forward in wide-eyed naivety is agonizing.

We're getting ready to trade our solar system away because we thought we could build airports out of bamboo and summon the cargo.

I enjoyed the first Expanse book. I thought that it had engaging characters and plot; that it was interesting, and well-paced. But this sequel is on another level. The character dynamics, the action sequence depictions, the references – absolute top tier.

“So where was there to go? We were both scared for different reasons. He needed safety and I needed some kind of familiar comfort.”

Denny's. You go to-

“I'm not sure how we decided on Denny's but that's where we wound up.”

Goddammit.
