This is not an adventure or fantasy, but it is a fictional tale set in medieval Mali during Sundiata's reign. That is something that is lacking in the literary world. Maryse Conde's SEGU comes close in terms of setting, but its set in the 18th/19 th century which is not the same thing. It is more a romance tale with a subplot that all but disappears until the last few chapters.
