Its fascinating how close to reality this book is given it was written in 1952... living in a world dominated by automation that alienates workers from their labour. Machines take up more and more jobs, leaving the masses to become numb, drunk, consumers funded by UBI. Only a few engineers maintain their status and reap the rewards of their labour, but one by one, they make themselves redundant via their creations.

I have never wished to understand somebody's mind more!

Topics Von neumann revolutionised or inspired individuals to revolutionise in the 1930s-1950's:

Computer hardware programming, Ai, viruses, simulations. Science fiction.

Neurobiology, the structure of genes & brains.
Game theory; economics, ulteristic evolution, stems thinking, nuclear defensive strategy.

Atomic physics; neutron capture, nukes, shock waves.

This should be on every history syllabus... I love the archaeological approach to viking day to life, the enlightening discussions on the innate complexity of Norse "gender" & gender roles and the description of how natural disasters most likely led to the concept of Ragnarok. Geomythology is fucking awesome 👌

Just because a man can do something, doesn't mean he should. Oppenheimer may have been a genuis but he was also a fool & Truman should be hung for war crimes for his part in his deceit. The fact that you can bring the smartest men in the world together and there only solution to war is vaporising civilians unnecessary fills me with abject disgust for all of humanity.
