Just finished the “Short Stories” section. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. All have this weird, liminal feeling: dream-like, a transcript of a nightmare

just read the first (and titular) short story and omfg, it’s the exact same, delicious and addictive feeling of “what the fuck have i just read” that i got when i read Amparo Davila’s short stories earlier this year

Finished Parts II (vignettes of the diaspora, including the narrator-author, at first disjointed but converges at the end in such a fascinating and satisfying way)

& III (re: the lives of Palestinians in the 1948 Palestine War—so far the most depressing of the book)

Finished Part 1: The Tale

In short, a recounting of Anton Shammas' childhood and family tree. Each vignette (no matter the brevity) is endearing. The narrative is intricately woven from one vignette to the next, jumping in time (reminds me of "One Hundred Years of Solitude"): revealing Palestine across the 20th century

Reads just like a Rousseau painting.

Well-steeped in the tales and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of Brazil. Thank God for Katrina Dodson’s numerous translator notes
