Started this last night after being intrigued with Bourdain’s worldview after seeing “Tony” and stumbling across various Substack posts about his social habits while traveling. Found this at a local used bookshop with my Mom. Going to put aside The White Album for now in favor of
this.

incredibly lived-in and detailed. wow.

I’m back in on this book. the last 30 pages were so compelling, and i’m slowly piecing together the family relations; the family tree included in the book is helpful. my fatal flaw was taking 2 and a half years to read this, but key themes and interpersonal connections are coming back to me as I continue to read. aiming to finish this before the weekend is over.

i liked the first half of the book a lot more. once the younger generations of the families get introduced in the second half, it gets really confusing between the same last names and similar first names. I’m no philistine, but the old style of writing isn’t me favorite to read…there’s a lot of spark note summaries in the mix here 😂
