It’s weird how Balzac will spend so much effort describing things like how the printing industry came to be or the intricacies of some dining room meanwhile a main character in the story gets sick and dies in the span of 2 pages… gorgeous prose, bad pacing, but that’s to be expected all things considered

At about this time she was beginning to individualise, synthesise, dramatise, superiorise, analyse, poetise, prosify, typify, colossify, angelicise, neologise and tragify—for one must violate the language to describe those novel whims in which some women indulge.

Working my way through this beastly drone one page at a time… I can’t imagine slogging through this without intimate knowledge and a fascination with Thompson… and so much for that. Selah.
