The Catcher in the Rye

Brooks Madison
Brooks Madison is on page 491 of 752 of Lost Illusions
It’s weird how Balzac will spend so much effort describing things like how the printing industry came to be or the intricacies of some dining room meanwhile a main character in the story gets sick and dies in the span of 2 pages… gorgeous prose, bad pacing, but that’s to be expected all things considered

“What other prodigies o cured in Moscow that night we … certainly will not try to find out — especially as it has come for us to go on to the second part of this truthful narrative. Follow me, reader!” [break: start of book 2] “Follow me, reader! Who told you that there is no true, faithful, eternal love in this world! … Follow me, my reader … and I will show you such a love!”

“She could not break free,- could she?— reaching with her arms, run to the roof's edge and into the Air, up-borne by Friendly Presences, as by Brilliance of Will, away across the Roof-slates and Fortifications, wheeling, beyond the range of all Weapons, beyond the need for any Obedience,...the Sun coming through, the River shining below, the great Warriors' River, keeping her course ever south-westward.“
