Okay, evolving into quick page-turning territory...

Library hold came in and I mulled whether to start reading something now with so many other books going on but, what the hell. Let's see where I come down on what appears to very much be a love it or hate it novel.

This has been sitting on my shelf for years and for some reason yesterday I chose to read a few pages while I waited for something and it engrossed me

Loving so far, and the set-up is there!

Love the way the author is revealing elements of the history of these women

Riveted by this...crime (!!!) novel?! There is something a little more clunky in the prose and that's when I realized it's not translated by the usual duo that has done her previous books. We'll see where it lands by the end...

This audiobook is AMAZING. I did not realize so many things about Applegate.

Endlessly interesting buuuut I'm finding it hard to pick back up on the story of these two boys/men.

Honestly I wish this was more interesting? It's kind of boring.

Just a superb superb short story writer. "Between the Shadow and the Soul" also made me weep. "To Sunland" had so many sad moments. "Brawler" was short, distinct. "Birdie" choked me up because four friends who lost touch twenty years ago reuniting contained a lot that spoke to me. And the novella-length "What's the Time, Mr. Wolf?" nearly lost me but I should never question Groff. She brought me right back in.

I had half an hour after my kid got on the bus before I started work so decided to read the first story in this and didn't know I was going to absolutely sob within 18 pages of a story?? Groff is truly one of the best writers today. "The Wind" proves it succinctly.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.

Okay finally understand why the first 65% of the book (lol) felt like exposition. This is kind of exhausting!!!

I just love the different styles of writing that are weaving together this story and timelines and THEMES

I have questions about some sections that briefly change the perspective or, suddenly do not center on Istanav, but I'll wait to the end to interrogate it completely. It's flying by, I'll give it that.

It's just so depressing

This is excellent... the subtleties and choices being made in the text, and what Kehlmann is saying--fantastic.

This returned back to the library as my borrow was up, but I probably need this break. It's so bleak and intense. Well done, and will just be waiting for my hold to come through again.

I know I shouldn't be shocked, but I am. This is so utterly sad.

Already know I need to read a lot more Ana Paula Maia. Love this.

The book is bringing me along, and I've chuckled a few times... the protagonist is hard to root for, but I'm hoping an epiphany in store through Bob.
