Christie’s early works are out of copyright, not many on project Gutenberg yet but more than enough for a revisit.

Unfortunately Roberts misreads Wellington’s intentions at points, from the evidence he presents it’s obvious that Wellington is advising the Government to keep Napoleon on the throne if negotiations were to happen before Waterloo, because W believes the French people will assassinate N after his retreat from Russia, which would save him invading France from the Spanish border and prevent massive loss of life,

Good lord this book became archaic in about 1982, she really wasn’t very good at predicting the future was she?

This is the good stuff, very early detective fiction before Conan Doyle got to the genre.

The first 21% of the book is really dry and confusing, you have to plough on and absorb names like aeffriedich and aerfreddik and then by the time you get to the timeline at the end of that segment it all makes sense.

Book in the series missing?

I like these books, she has a sense of humour especially with the names, sometimes she runs out of steam with the language used in dialogue but it’s not bad enough to send me into a rage.
