Really enjoying piercing together Theo’s life. Reminiscent of ‘A Man Called Ove’

Navalny’s narrative voice is so strong, and so pleasant to read. I have to keep reminding myself these are the words of a dead man. He’s is just so “normal”- the poisoning attempt on his life that opens the book is while he’s on a plane watching Rick and Morty…. Weirdly comforting in our descent into fascism that even Russian political targets have mundane lives a lot of the time.

Got horrendously sick this week, but it finally gave me time to read, and probably gave me the right headspace to relate to Smith’s hunger to go and make in her sickly childhood years. This is the second memoir of hers I’ve read, and I am just so mesmerized by the intersection of her life and the lives of artists I love. Her voice is fascinating and sometimes feels like she is omniscient?

“I’m scared to die. I want to live a little more, just a few more years, if god wills it. I know it will be a good rest when we go- but- oh, to taste freshly brewed tea, with a spot of cream. I still want that. Especially when it’s cold outside.”

The words “ecology“ and “economy“ come from the same route, the Greek Coast, meaning “home“ or “household“: I.E., the systems of relationship, the goods and services that keep us alive.

“Jesus is easy to love and God much harder. Jesus also has his own reality, his place in history, whereas God is like a dim point of light in a dark room .”
