Excited to be rereading this book that had a significant impact on my conceptualisations around my own personal relationship with “celebrity” during my formative years.

I have referenced it so much over the years as I remember it as a great piece of writing that really made you consider things from a different perspective.

Hoping it still holds up a an enjoyable read many many years later 😊

I’m 49 chapters in and i don’t care about anyone, in fact there are some characters i think are very poor thinkers, and its very very bland. There’s a lot of attention to random details, in a way that doesn’t do much to paint a picture, for me. I think the issue is, there isn’t very much to connect to emotionally. Reading as i enjoyed the show, and want to find some answers, but it’s become tedious.

Re-reading this six years later! I read it in the first year of training i wanted to see how my experience of it changed reading it now im done with my training :)

Surprisingly dissappointed to find race, class, gender etc heavily informing the narrative voice at play here.. along with … a freudian attitude towards clients’ assertions …

Suppose i should have expected it given the age of the book…
Some things to extrapolate from, but also demonstrates prominent attitudes and values of its time …

Once Upon a One Night’s Reread 😊

One thing I marvel at, as someone who after a period of righteous indignation and impulsive answering back became for the most part a generally acquiescent child, is when children are outspoken and courageous and speak up. As an adult, I look back and wonder at what opportunities I might have been able to fight for myself to have had I just continued to be wilful, continued to be stubborn and defiant. 😊

I find a tear is slowly rolling out from the corner of my eye as I read Diane Abbott’s words about Miss Di, I feel a strong sense of the love of family, of home, of the warmth and community, and shared lineage of that first trip back to Jamaica. It make me think of my grandmother who’s no longer earth-side, and it just … really packed an emotional punch

Crying crying at the familiar pains of societies that despise women, ostensibly blaming them for their own oppression. Chai.

How often men find ways to turn the violence of their environments inwards and onto their families 🫥 the way this pattern echos across cultures, across times

What I will say, is I can definitely see a lot of growth in Hibbert’s writing from this book to the Brown sisters.

A page turner! Started reading this yesterday evening and didn’t put it down until past midnight. 🥹💙
