At this point the pages say more about the author than the story at this point. He describes the Conrad White character and his book Jarvis & Wellesley much the same way. . .maybe that's his point, and is intentional.

It's laid on very thick #thisisCanada, with a layer of "moody broody artsy single man". I'll have to see how it develops though. . .as being only 40 pages in still leaves a lot left to go.
