"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

— Mark 8:36

Unconsciously, perhaps, we treasure the power we have over people by their regard for our opinion of them, and we hate those upon whom we have no such influence. I suppose it is the bitterest wound to human pride.

‘You certainly have less vanity than any man I’ve ever known’, I said.
‘I love her so much better than myself. It seems to me that when vanity comes into love it can only be because really you love yourself best...'

‘Beauty is something wonderful and strange that the artist fashions out of the chaos of the world in the torment of his soul. And when he has made it, it is not given to all to know it. To recognize it you must repeat the adventure of the artist. It is a melody that he sings to you, and to hear it again in your own heart you want knowledge and sensitiveness and imagination.’

‘I tell you I’ve got to paint. I can’t help myself. When a man falls into the water it doesn’t matter how he swims, well or badly: he’s got to get out or else he’ll drown.’

‘Why do nice women marry dull men?’
‘Because intelligent men won’t marry nice women.’

"If you have no enemies, find a way to make them" is a very slippery slope...

...for most of us regular citizens

"A good life is everything you need and some of what you want. If you have everything you want, you appreciate none of what you have."

💯 💯💯

"The most powerful definition of wealth is not what you have. What actually matters is the gap between what you have and what you want."

DON QUIXOTE: "Do you really believe, sirs, that I look like an innkeeper."

TRAVELLER: "I don't know what you look like, but I do know you're talking nonsense when you call this inn a castle."

😭😭😭

Experimenting on your lovely wife to test her virtue and fidelity will never reap a satisfying outcome...

Men were so in love and obsessed that they thrashed in rage and madness if they failed ONLY ONCE... 🤧

Someone you caught up with is not always the reason to save them...

Especially if they are already testified as offenders of the law and bounded by chains...

Don Quixote's mistaking an inn for a castle does not detract any AURA out of him (surprisingly)...

If it were in the modern days, Don Quixote would be a crime to see in all parts of the globe...

He stopped stubbornly before the door.

‘I never knew how hard it is to die,’ he said simply.

It was like grasping water to think how quickly the years had passed here.

They were nearly gone.

It was in the nature of things and yet it brought a sense of betrayal and anger,

of never having understood anything much.

"‘Life is a peculiar venture,’ he was fond of saying. ‘You never know how low or high you’ll go. No matter how you rise in the world never look down on another. That way you can never go far wrong.’"

‘Man proposes …’ Moran said darkly.
‘And God stays out of it,’ McQuaid twisted round the old saw.

Reminds me of my late grandfather's plight...

How I miss him already 🥹🥺😭
