Cujo differs significantly from Stephen kings other novels because the villain here is man's best friend - in this case, a Saint Bernard who only acts violent after a bite from a rabid bat. The story takes time to develop the main characters (Tad Vic and Donna) and briefly develops the characters of Cujo's owner, Brett Camber & his dad, Joe, a mechanic. Even Cujo himself is given time to develop (as best a dog can)
