this book is so gross

every ottessa moshfegh is so weird and offputting and full of the horrors of humanity and every time she teeters just beyond the point of going too far. but its always so entrancing. idk what it is abt her style that gets me reading ceaselessly but she truly is so talented in the most irritating way

considering abandoning this book… it might pick up its just like 15 separate perspectives that only last 3 pages at a time and it feels so dull. i’ve been finishing books at a reasonable pace but i’ve had to renew this at the library twice already.

something about the writing style of this book that makes the most mundane actions and descriptions so alluring. dialogue between zooey and franny is so playful and incisive. good good read <3

very excessively wordy with lots of footnotes. messy in the best way. fun and playful with lots of silly vocabulary

the dialogue in this novel is so strange and unsettling. I can’t tell if thats just the writing or if it’s supposed to add to the tone of the plot but no one would ever go about a conversation like this. particularly the way Miles and his wife communicate just gives me the creeps.

I couldn’t do this book justice by writing an update or describing anything abt it. I love the writing. the language has so much depth. so many entrancing metaphors. I love boulder. I love the literary tone… I love the escapism this book provides me by pretending I am as hardened and mysterious as the protagonist. this book is so good

starting off with the story of turtle island and it’s so sweet!! so much love for the earth radiating from this book. such an important reminder of caring for our surroundings and each other. wholesome.

I don’t always understand or relate to the narrative of this book, but I do feel very seen in the post-loss pessimism and the desire to reevaluate the meaning of life. I wouldn’t say that this book is a masterpiece; it’s very much a bleak struggle. I’m convinced any young adult who has experienced the death of a parent would find similar feelings in this novel.

I’m not understanding the point of there being so much emotionless sexual content. maybe the whole point is for this to be abrasive and tiresome but I think there’s more to the color blue than that.

the color of grief described solely through the senses experienced and remembered in the memory. I feel so understood in this book. specifically on this page.

this book is so beautifully written and poetic. a whole page dedicated to “Palace at 4 am” which is subsequently my favorite sculptural work of art now. in tears over how gorgeous this short book is.

this book is so long and it makes great points but oh, please wrap it up. anticipation for the climax has been building for the last several chapters but it’s very comparable to animal farm in the theme of authoritarian sabotage in order to evoke anger for the war. it is a complex idea, (and its well done!) but it is so difficult to get through. i’m begging for an ending that is less bleak than the story thus far
