I feel like demon children saying "come play with us" is a little played out at this point

Trying not to be suspicious about the vaguely Christian subtext paired with the fact that the protagonist's big struggles are framed as being the emasculation of the husband and the fact that the wife is both gay and didn't want to be a mom. Feeling a little "dissolution of the traditional family brought back the forest demons" to me.

Wow, everyone in this town sucks! I do love a good complex and somewhat unlikable protagonist, and both Rachel and Finn kind of fit that bill, and their toxic sludge of a marriage is.... messy, but compelling. I wish we could see more of Charlie. The kid POVs swap off between being very good and kind of stilted.

Unfortunately the mystery and horror is not very effective to me personally.

If this plotline with Charlie is going where I think it is I will be sorely disappointed. Not because its bad but because the tropes used make it a bit predictable, which undercuts the horror of it

Call me delusional, but I am curious whether anyone has posited a queer reading for Emma and Harriet. With the whole "Emma has said she never wants to marry and hasn't yet met a man she's found interest in" bit and all

I realize I sound like I'm dissing this book. I am not. When I say that this book is the literary equivalent of being an awkward plus one at a cocktail party where everyone is sad and hates each other, this is in fact a testament to how well this book captures that particular voyeuristic isolation. This is SO well written

The book IS admittedly starting to get to me. Going to have to read something cheery after. There are characters that like each other hear, but any such positive sentiment reads as distant, as if felt through cellophane wrap, while negative sentiment is raw and potent. It's a weird, watery, distant sort of book in a cool way. LOVE the prose

Kind of coated in this layer of malaise, but in an appealingly dreary way, rather than a depressing or discouraging way that makes you want to not read it. All of the characters are incredibly complicated and high-strung and human, all of them really likeable in the way that lets you know you would despise interacting them in real life. Weirdo lesbians my beloved. Want more old gods though

I am getting a tiny bit vexed by Anne being so Constantly Perfect. I yearn for more drama

I will never be tired of the sheer drama that is the carriage accident chapter. Also in my mind, Anne Elliot looks at the camera like in the office whenever someone in her family says something stupid.
