I forgot how depressing I find Dickens characters. I’m sure there’s light and goodness somewhere deep sighing the humanity he writes but it’s … subdued. BUT I’ve just hit a streak of beautiful character descriptions full pulled me so fully into the moment, the depravity, the humility of life that I feel re-endeared to him.

I loved sinking into this world—a modern woman in an old society. The story follows a promising girl who—in pursuit of maximum freedom, choice, experience—ends up in mundane isolation.
We have always been here! Exploring and choosing and regretting and wondering the same things!

How do we fit with choice/duty/fate? In the end she faces the choice to live into her choices and their consequences or slip away.

“Don't try so much to form your character — it's like trying to pull open a tight, tender young rose. Live as you like best, and your character will take care of itself. Why indeed should we perpetually be thinking whether things are good for us, as if we were patients lying in a hospital? Why should I be so afraid of not doing right? As if it mattered to the world whether I do right or wrong!”

Deeper than any appetite for renunciation — was the sense that life would be her business for a long time to come. And at moments there was something inspiring, almost enlivening, in the conviction. It was a proof of strength — it was a proof she should some day be happy again. It couldn't be she was to live only to suffer; she was still young, after all, and a great many things might happen to her yet.

Sweet! The story was bob miller or Tuesdays with morrie meets Emily miller book. Not actually romcom-fluffy vibes but in the simplicity of the writing I guess.

Sweet but a little too long. Winding, but not in a beautiful, curious, serendipitous way. It felt a little ungrounded/under written.

Still loved lol

Listened to this and audibly gasped because it was sooo cheesy at some points. I liked the idea of the plot but truly a classic romance poet gooey vibe.
