Picked it up again after a 1 year hiatus. A strange experience. If I were more besotted I really would have started again from scratch- but repeating any passages of this treacherous mountain feels impossibly cruel. That'd feel too much like being Sisyphus- ya feel me. So I continue on - half blind and confused- stumbling through the dark towards an uncertain end destination (probably not a peak- probably a trof)

I accidentally started both the Hobbit and the Fellowship of the ring across different devices- further continuing my trend of being really confused by this story

Less than a 100 pages in and I'm already crying... "Somewhere off in the distance, a wolf was howling. Crows circled the broken tower, looking for corn." 😭😭 iykyk

V inspiring- makes me wanna create. The most removed from phone and interconnectedness early 20s experience one could imagine. So isolated and therefore creating their own world. Any envy of her rock star status dissolves when you hear the conditions.... perhaps (as in many cases), Patti Smith made it because she had no other options, did not consider a backup plan. I love how Robert created so many domestic alters

Okay it got funnier and more interesting. A bit like a movie - just one simple plotline and little details coming together. First third was a bit dull but necessary set up / foreshadowing

If I keep this up and read 30 -40 pages a day I could read... a lot of books. We will see.

Listening to the audiobook narrated by Barbara herself. She is a lot gentler spoken than I expected. She kind of emphasises EVERY word. I suppose she feels the emotion and poetry. She really pronounces and takes her time savoring every syllable in every word, making it quite slow, so I can get frustrated. Have to be able to get into a slow pace mindset to engage. Beautiful story thus far.

It is so full of folk tale magic - but it totally speaks to my inner child (and adult lets b honest). Reminds me of the Cassy Cassidy books I read about gypsy kids as a kid.

I'm sticking to it hoping it shows some light for humanity/ has an uplifting message at the end, somehow I need that from it.

Its giving me more in my current contemplation on archetypes and traditional storytelling

Intimate story of the life and memories of a sensitive, gay boy growing up in the intergenerational aftermath of the Vietnam War. Recollections told with a dream like quality. Stories are tied together by smells, sensation, emotion, or thematic links. Ocean traverses his own subconscious and in doing so tells the stories of his mother and grandmother's - whose words and souls are woven into the fabric of his mind.
