I first read this in high school when I was about 16. I really liked it at the time, but I think in some ways I wasn't really ready for it. I am reading it again partly to refresh myself, and partly to see if it still holds up. My prediction is that it will be a few good ideas buried under too much rhetoric.

I love this book so far, and it feels like it's going to take for-fucking-ever to finish it.

Finished "Doors." Taking a break before I read the other essays.

In the final stretch now--70 pages of material left.

This book is challenging, kind of like a vigorous workout. It feels difficult at the time, but afterward feels very rewarding.

This book has a lot of problems. If the title makes you want to read it, you should definitely read it, but there are a lot of places that *should* have citations, and don't. The second half of the book, with the "shamanism" information, does not feel like it treats traditional shamanism with the respect it deserves.
