so interesting and fun how the bunnies gradually loose their individual identities as samantha becomes part of their group. so much so that they were first introduced by their nicknames, then referred to by their actual names, now they are all one entity only referred to as“bunny”.

a very lovely character study, this book introduces the characters and their stories in beautiful ways and intertwines them all together very creatively. it’s really interesting rather than describing the characters, the focus is on the details of the cafe- and the stories of those who frequent the space

“obedience is not enough. unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own? power is inflicting pain and humiliation. power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in shapes of your own choosing.”

“war hysteria is continuous and universal in all countries, and such acts as raping, looting, the slaughter of children, the reduction of whole populations to slavery, and reprisals against prisoners which extend even to boiling and burying alive, are looked upon as normal, and, when they are committed by one’s own side and not by the enemy, meritorious.”

i saw someone criticize the way in which orwell wrote winston’s love interest, and i’m starting to see that now. although right now, it seems deliberate. i think ive heard that “julia” by sandra newman is a good retelling of 1984 from julia’s perspective so id be interested in reading that

lots of underlining so far. including “ don’t you see that the whole aim of newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? in the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it”, really highlighting the importance of an extensive vocabulary which is something i’ve never really thought to consider before.

“.. then hoped that some days our cities would open up more and let the green and the land and the wilderness in more, to remind people that we’re allotted a little space on earth and that we survive in that wilderness that can take back what it’s given, as easily as blowing its breath on us or sending the sea to tell us we’re not so big.”

“the river was mild and leisurely, going away from the people who ate shadows for breakfast and steam for lunch and vapors for supper. the river was very real; it held him comfortably and gave him the time at last, to leisure, to consider this month, this year, and a lifetime of years. he listened to his heart slow, this thoughts stopped rushing with his blood.”

things are moving along really fast between emma and justin and it’s super dramatic, this would make for a good hallmark movie haha

i’m curiouser, what is the true plot of this book? simply to be “funny” and entertaining? entertaining sure, im enjoying it but the modern ipad kid in me is like BORING I NEED MURDER OR SWEEP ME OFF MY FEET ROMANCE OR SOME STUPID DRAMA. it’s a fluffy, short, book and im enjoying the change of pace from my normal reads. also, i see the attempt at a comedic aspect but i don’t find it funny

challenging yet keeping my interest so far. along with the fact i don’t normally read 3rd person pov, this book was written in the 70’s and some minor views the characters have are a bit outdated. other than those minor struggles i have, im encouraged and excited to keep reading. i’m curious as to what the theme of this book it and how the story will tie together

it’s still pretty corny but still keeping my interest. the main character just visited a priest for guidance and he basically said a whole lot of nothing which made me want to put the book down but i digress
