Ok so now we have multi-pov and both first and third person narrator. Rhysand’s pov read pretty similar to Feyre’s.

It’s fun to see just how much Rebecca Yarros took from Rhys and Feyre in the Fourth Wing books. Xaden is pretty much a copy of Rhysand, plus dragons.

I started this book fully expecting the literary equivalent of junk food, so far, so good

Please let Tamlin be the love interest, I am tired of the dark and brooding type

I am honestly pretty close to not even attempting to finish this. I am quite tired of everyone in this book being a shitty person, having the opportunity to stop, and consciously deciding to keep being a homicidal, backstabbing asshole. And also eeeeeveryone is full of pain and agony and anger and rage and every negative emotion under the sun. It’s exhausting.

I guess my problem with historical fiction is that the destination is already known, so the journey itself has to be amazing. And, well, I’m not getting that here. It feels like the author spent all her writing magic on the first chapters of She Who Became The Sun.

I guess I just wish there was one character who is a somewhat decent person and not a hate-filled traitor or a delusional maniac. I guess Ma was supposed to be that character but I just can’t stand her.

So far so good, characters and setting are interesting! The deal with the ghosts so far feels like some kind of magical realism.

Interesting coincidence that I read the Apothecary Diaries and now this book features another beautiful eunuch

Ok now the staves, which don’t match with what we know about magic in this world, but hey, wizards have to have their staves

It gets a little… preachy? manifesto-ish? at certain points, it works better when the focus is on the story itself

Oh dear god so much info dumping in this chapter! And all the POV switching makes it so I can’t really connect with the characters.

This book is probably more enjoyable to someone who has at least visited the city. It reminds me of Gaiman’s Neverwhere, so linked to the city, its places and its culture, that if you don’t know it, you miss half of the significance of every event.
