I realized that until that moment, I’d never seen him truly unleashed. The barely constrained anger that he’d held in check while demanding to know Vainar’s crimes against me burst free in a torrent that shattered the moment. When I saw his face, I thought that rage might be enough to shatter the entire world.

I fail to suppress the twitch of my lip.

He leans forward, resting his forearms on his thighs. “I’m pleased to see my inner turmoil amuses you, Princess.”

“The way you were looking at me earlier. . .” He leans against the wall by the window, his eyes glinting playfully as he shakes his head. “I thought I’d better cover myself up as much as possible. I was feeling very vulnerable.”

There’s a broad smile on his face, and it’s that, more than anything, that makes me realize how dangerous this man—this wolf—is. This is someone who has no need to conceal his emotions, because who would dare judge him or take advantage of him because of them? He looks like if he decided to punch the ground, he would cause an earthquake.

“I am tired of the whole concept of humans right now.”

“Cold, Princess?”

“If you were a gentleman—”

“Not a gentleman.” He grins. “Wolf.”

I shiver, and I’m not sure if it’s the temperature, or the look in his eyes. “You’re a sadist, that’s what you are.”

“I was trained for this. I was trained to be beautiful and silent and obedient. I forged a prison for my wild and angry soul and I waited for the day to come when I was to be wed. A small part of me dreamed that one day I would fall in love like the princesses in my mother’s stories, that one day I would be free.”

It was really too bad they were in his parents’ living room, and that his parents were definitely staring at them, because Shane wanted to jump into Ilya’s lap and kiss him into the floor.

“Since their rookie season,” Shane heard his mother say. “I can’t believe it.”

“Looking at them now, I kind of can,” his father said.

I’ve been surveying Americans when at events, and it’s crazy how many didn’t know what loons were until watching Heated Rivalry. 🤣

“What the fuck bird makes a noise like that?”
“A loon!” Shane said again. Then he doubled over in hysterics. Ilya wanted to push him into the fire.
“Fuck you and your loon!” Ilya said. “Stupid Canadian wolf bird.”

“Wow. Is McGill a town? What the fuck is McGill?”

“It’s a school! A university in Montreal! A very famous one.”

Ilya shrugged and took a sip of his beer.

My first sports romance book. Never thought this day would come. 🤣 The show was my first time intentionally putting a hockey game on tv… (I know, I know… #badcanadian )
