To prevent us from shooting each other in the darkness white armlets would be worn. At this moment a messenger arrived to say that there were no white armlets. Out of the darkness a plaintive voice suggested: "Couldn't we arrange for the Fascists to wear white armlets instead?"

Tempted to change some ratings from books long in the past. Had Invisible Cities on my shelf forever and I'd have sworn I never read it. But I gave it 5 stars? Guess the rating wasn't for memorability. Also not sure about Robin Hobb's 5 stars. I was probably reading a lot of miserable shit at the time and she can be extremely entertaining if not exactly life changing.

I suppose I should leave the ratings alone

Was looking up something in Les Miserables and came across "There was a celebrated Fourier in the Academy of Sciences whom posterity has forgotten, and an obscure Fourier in some unknown garret whom the future will remember."

Dead wrong about that.

Apparently my kid found a way to update my books via my Kindle (which is gradually becoming "our" Kindle) - I'll have to watch out for that.

I have no idea what initially attracted me to this book, but so far it's a slog.

The problem with the Goodreads star system is that there's no rating for "this is absolute trash". "I didn't like it" feels like it should be more of "it just wasn't for me".

I'm already starting my review. Everything about this book is great except Alex. Unfortunately, Alex is the protagonist and we're never apart from her. She seems like a nice, smart, middle class, state-school-going community theater actor playing the role of Alex.

The story/writing so far is interesting enough, but Alex herself is deeply boring.

This will be by far the best book I've read this year unless it takes a drastic turn for the worse.

Looking for recommendations for fiction by a Burundian author. If in French, it needs to be <100 pages because that is twice as much tolerance as I have for reading in French.

I don't typically read this type of book, but the author lives in my hometown (where my parents still live). Just from the preview, I've been to almost every mentioned town and neighborhood and even the small jewelry store. Despite this, it's not a familiar story in my personal life.

I appreciate that Chiang releases stories as he writes them, but it's a bit frustrating that I'd already read 5/9.

Can there be any more descriptions of people standing, sitting or squatting? His left arm rested against his right knee...

This must not be a literary short story month for me because although some of the stories have been good, I haven't been interested in pushing forward

Notes for 2 star review: The things I hated most were the dialog and the way that instead of having abilities that naturally dictate the action, Sigrud (and Tati and Shara) get whatever they need for plot armor, taking away any possibility of suspense. That is, the plot resolutions become obvious, but by way of info dumps.

The dialog is so bad. The aphorisms are so annoying. The plot twist was so unsubtly forecast. I can't believe that people whose tastes I otherwise share liked this book.
