Im sure part of my irritation can be attributed to the fact that I chose an audiobook for this and the narrator is terrible. But OH MY GOD I WANT THIS TO BE OVER I guessed the plot twist ten million years ago NOTHING IS HAPPENING AND THIS BOOK IS BARELY ABOUT AN OCTOPUS and EVERY TINY ACTION IS DESCRIBED

I am routinely astounded by how many contemporary authors clearly wish they were film auteurs, scriptwriting and directing instead of actually making a novel as its own work, unique to the literary medium. If I met Van Pelt, I would ask her, why do I need to know that Cameron pats his back pocket because his wallet is there? Why do I need to know every time Tova says “hello?”

I recently read Lahiri’s short story, A Temporary Matter, for my workshop class. It absolutely flattened me, one of the most perfect and immaculate and evocative pieces of prose I’ve ever experienced. I knew immediately that her fiction would become a fixture in my life. The quality of this novel, so far, is hardly a surprise.
