In these last few chapters, Kaufmann’s distinct examinations of theology and religion show how the two are, in practice, often separate from one another and subject to different points of criticism. This continues to be an excellent and thought-provoking philosophical work.

Kaufmann makes some very interesting, thoughtful points in this examination of philosophy, religion, theology, rationality, faith, reason, and thinking in general. While I do not agree with all of his points, this book does precisely what it is intended to do: force the reader consider their own assumptions and processes of thinking and evaluate them deeply and honestly. I am very excited to continue reading.

“Modesty is so much easier that honesty because it is compatible with sloth.”

This book, if read correctly, kind of feels like being shoved to ground then offered a helping hand from the same one who pushed you. It is nothing if not convicting, and upon reading it a second time, I’m getting even more insight from Epictetus’ observations about living properly, in accordance with God and Nature. Even if someone kills me, they cannot harm me.

it just gets better every time :’)
