I picked this up because I am going to China for the first time and I thought it would be exciting to read based on the “gripping” details on the jacket of the book. The book was not “gripping“ or “fascinating“ as the New York Times stated. This book was incredibly dry, incredibly dull and very disappointing.

I feel like this book was a little bit tainted for me by what Maureen Callahan said on her YouTube channel. But it was a good story and I do wish this woman the very best.

I had trouble focusing on the beginning, because of the toggling of two stories, but ultimately I was able to understand the connection and this book makes me want to read the scarlet letter next.
