There are some interesting ideas in here. "What if Bluebeard was a woman and also mommy" definitely has legs. If you've seen the film, this adds an expansion on what happened to Miriam's former lovers and some extra details on the role of Alice. Alice and Sarah Roberts are somewhat of narrative foils in the novel's overall scheme, but I almost prefer the adaptation that allows their presence to be self explanatory

It wants and deserves to be a comic book. As a novel it asks for patience that doesn't entirely pay off. Meh

Up to chapter 7. Hopefully someone out there can separate Huizinga's racism from something that might actually be useful or interesting in this book

Tracking your progress in this book is very odd as you’re reading the end as well as the middle (if you follow the commentary).

Many stories within stories. It should be called "The Vampires Lestat, Armand, and Marius". I would have been very satisfied with Lestat's retrospective ending after a certain character's death- the plot pivots in a direction that would have benefited from being its own story. I'd say everything from NDL's death onwards should have been moved to its own volume. That being said, everything before that was gorgeous.

Somewhere around page 25, I challenged myself to finish this book as an act of will. After all, the book seems very promising while you prepare to get into Langan’s own material. The epigram, an excerpt from Moby Dick about flailing out against symbols of the immensity of the universe, suggests that a thoughtful and poignant journey is ahead.
