I simultaneously want this to only ever exist as a novel because it's simply doing things other forms cannot do, but also Science Saru need to anime adapt this yesterday. I feel like a trippy dippy rotoscopy psychological thriller sports anime adaptation could do it justice.

One super power of the novel form I've been forgetting - revelation through commitment. Getting the full physical description of a character who has been around since the start of the book 400-odd pages in, thereby subverting/clarifying/revealing/recontextualising every prior appearance of that character. Such a good but so flippantly presented moment it made me tear up a little.
