i read this when i was 14 and it confused me i saw it in the library this morning and was like oh fun i should reread it. i like helen oyeyemi at least the other books i read later in high school. i think i was just too young to follow/appreciate this that first time. enjoying it so far.

my friend told me to read this but i'm all misogyny'd out after american psycho lol. whatever it is short so :P

the gory scenes are so disgusting i have to read them with my eyes closed (i invented a way to do so out of necessity)

she really loves food & idk if all these detailed descriptions of food are leading up to something or if she's just using it as a tool to describe like vietnamese vs american vs mexican culture. it kinda feels like it is missing something idk -_-

it is more interesting now LOL i like it :^) it is talking a lot about girlhood and the pressures of conforming and it is so foreign to me because i didnt give af about "girlhood" at all i was never like this. also conforming being vietnamese in america and obv that is a foreign experience to me too bcuz im white. it is interesting

A few thoughts: 1) It is insane to see such privileged people argue so self-righteously over Iraq and pretend as if they will be victims of whatever outcome. And betting on the outcome. Insane. 2) In the break-in scene it is the women who are most victimized even though neither of them did anything to Baxter. Rosalind is held an knifepoint. Daisy is forced to strip & threatened with rape.

The narrator is a neurosurgeon & his encounters with neurodegenerative diseases are interesting. There is the encounter with Baxter, who has Huntington's disease; there is his mother, who has dementia (and the narrator is much more in-tune with her psychic state). He's not observing them as a poet (he is averse to poetry) but describing each condition like a scientist.

Interesting... I was a bit mislead about what this book is but I still find it interesting. Don't know how I feel about the main character. Do like the descriptions of the banalities of everyday life esp. since it takes place in 2003 & I have that delusion of mine. One of the minor characters has a discman.

this book really sucks.... not one description of women that isnt disgustingly misogynistic so far

a lot of the tech problems would be solved if social expectations of women changed (or if women stopped caring about them which is a great way to initiate change...) like eye trackers not working because of mascara? don't wear make-up. no pockets? wear men's pants (though we should have pants catered to female hips that have pockets -_-). still tech developers should be considering women in these things

it's nice to have an audiobook to listen to in the morning while doing chores & stuff. i like all the women artists... the men are boring
