i was listening to country music i haven't heard since high school and got nostalgia for my teenage civil war phase so i am rereading some of my civil war books. i kinned this man so hard it was crazy. this time around i am heavily annotating it with exactly why i relate to him.

my ex-coworker gave this to me at least a year ago (her mom with dementia was a librarian & is in a care facility now & coworker is trying to sort through all her belongings & i asked for books lol). i am now actually reading it. i was so charmed by the back cover saying "lois duncan is on the internet" that i spent hours on the wayback machine looking at her website lol. not much reading done today!

i really appreciate hollypaw's struggles accepting women's role. "does everyone want me to have kits? are she-cats supposed to all have kits? what if i want to be clan leader! can i do both? i don't want to be a mom i want to be a warrior!" so true

it says this was published in 2013 but i swear to god it is chatgpt -> "Let me know if you’d like to develop this into a sidebar or standalone section—e.g., “Biblical Angels vs. Traditional Depictions”. It’s a strong point that ties directly into your larger thesis: If angels appear as men, then so will their offspring—making modern Nephilim much harder to detect." in the middle of the section

the "hating men or loving women?" section is so good... one of my pet peeves... why are you wasting so much energy on hating men when you could focus on helping women instead. "There is an understanding of feminism which prioritises disliking particular ‘dominant’ men (and the women deemed to be politically or socially aligned with them), and there is one which prioritises finding compassion for all women"

i have book club books to read but MORE IMPORTANTLY i had to find a book about masculinity because i realized i was reading "femininity" and "androgyny". i'm getting to the bottom of this gender debacle. i dnf'd eve (i still want to read it but now is clearly not the time & i have to return it to the library =P)

she's also doing a kind of invert thing too but less "gay men are women on the inside" and more "gay men act a lot like straight women in terms of caring a lot about their appearances because they are also trying to be sexually desirable to men". she was also like "straight men and lesbians tend not to gaf about all that because they don't want to titillate men" which is kind of true but not true enough for lesbians

she felt the need to differentiate between bisexuality and androgyny which was perplexing to me at first and then i was like oh no it makes sense if you view heterosexuality as normal sexual expression and homosexuality as inversion (i.e. attraction to men is "feminine", homosexual men have "feminine sexuality"). bisexuality involves an interplay of feminine & masculine sexuality which is "androgynous" ig

"I know what some people think about short hair—they say short hair is mannish, dyky. I could risk wearing my hair quite short if I wore makeup and dresses, or put on some earrings, or if I weren’t a feminist and an ambitious careerist, or if I were married and had two children, but close-cropped hair on someone like me adds to an image I do not mean to project."

i wish i could beam this into every girl & woman's brain LOL the stuff in chapter one about discomfort around the female body and the hatred of adult women resonates sooo deeply as a woman who has a lot of experience with dysphoria & body dysmorphia in general and i think like just about every woman alive has experience with stuff like that

As Farrell himself warned in his 1971 New York Times essay, “the image of masculinity is so all-pervasive” that “it is easier to use surgery” to change a man’s sex than it is “to undo the social and cultural conditioning.”

men are always doing this nowadays

The new field readers, for the most part, neither understood nor supported educational equity. One reader, whose job was to review applications that would help enforce Title IX, asked the panel’s moderator plaintively, “What is Title Nine?” Another woman, who was supposed to be reviewing applications to help disabled women, wanted to know if being a Native American qualified as a “disability.”
