On peut résumer beaucoup de ce livre par: "oh Dean…"

"A few months later Camille birth to Dean’s second baby, the result of a few night’s rapport early in the year. And another matter of months and Inez had a baby. With one illegitimate child in the West somewhere, Dean then had four little ones and not a cent, and was all trouble and ecstasy and speed as ever. So we didn’t go to Italy."

"’What is the meaning of this voyage to New-York? What kind of sordid business are you on now? I mean, man, wither goest thou? Wither goest thou, America, in thy shiny car in the night?’
‘Wither goest thou?’ echoed Dean with his mouth open. We sat and didn’t know what to say; there was nothing to talk about any more. The only thing to do was go."

"I examined the LA night. What brutal, hot, siren-whining nights they are! Right across the street there was trouble. An old rickety rundowm rooming house was the scene of some kind of tragedy. The cruiser was pulled up below and the cops were questioning an old man with gray hair. Sobbings came from within. I could hear everything, together with the hum of my hotel neon. I never felt sadder in my life."

Lots of great reflexions…
"Marxists have always been accused of using the wrong tone. Not so much by the revisionists themselves as by vacillating elements who wanted to blur the discussion in order to soften the sharp angles and avoid posing the problems precisely."
