Hour three? We didn’t read much but we did learn about reproductive anatomy

Hour 2 of our 24 reading challenge :)

I’m back, bitches.

Reading this out of pure spite now. I’m not even annotating anymore. I need to talk to the writer, the editors, the fucking reviewers calling this “masterful” and “compelling.” The premise is SO GOOD but the book falls so short of any potential it had. It could be fixed too, by a good editor. But did so, and now it’s just the author’s romantic fantasies instead of a substantive piece of literature.

(TW: SA) (also spoilers but I would not recommend this book ever so do with that what you will) This will not be my only update tonight but GOD this book sucks. A quarter through and it’s already defeated the premise of “two good men;” I hate Steve for pursuing the killer of a pedophile that’s raped 54 boys. I’m sorry, there’s no way in hell I’d do anything but turn a blind eye to that. What the fuck!!!

I’ve never purposefully DNF’d a book and I’ll be damned if I start now. That being said, they are moving AWFULLY FAST for a 28 year age gap and being a detective and possible SUSPECT in this crime scene. This is wrong on so many levels.

I was gonna read so much more tonight. I was. But then I learned that the romance in this book includes a TWENTY EIGHT YEAR AGE GAP. No I’m not exaggerating; I reread that sentence over and over again. Yes I’m certain they’re setting up a romance here; it’s explicitly stated as such in the blurb. I need to set this down and reconsider ever picking it up again. TWENTY EIGHT YEARS! He is LITERALLY twice her age

My goal is to have an update every day this week. Is it because I have an essay on race in gothic horror due on November 17th… maybe. But I did choose that topic so I am motivated to read about it! I am! I will read!

I’m back :) College is wild and time-consuming but I’m reading this as a reference for a film project and hoping it catapults me back into reading consistently. I also had to do a media “fast” for 24 hours where I couldn’t consume ANY media and not being allowed to read made me want to read more?? Shout-out to the power of spite I guess

I promise I will read more be back soon, college is just time consuming.
I’ve started watching Kaos on Netflix which is a Greek Mythology based story in a modern setting. Amazing show, but please look into trigger warnings beforehand. It’s Greek myth. It’s wild.
I bought a copy of the Iliad by another translator I’m itching to finally read it… but I want to read the 3 translations side by side. 🤓

The Walter E Washington Convention center is hosting the FREE National Book Conference this Saturday, 8/24!! I’ll be there :)

Just found out that HBO has an adaptation of this play and it’s good, like *good* good, Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, won Golden Globes, Emmys, Guild Awards… why have I never heard of this??

I like the play thus far, I’m only through act one, but what stuck with me most was from Tony Kushner’s introduction:
“I’m writing this introduction the day before America goes to the polls to vote for Mitt Romney or Barack Obama… perched on the knife’s edge of terror and hope… more extremely opposed than ever before. Whatever tomorrow brings*, the future… remains indeterminate.

*It turned out OK.”

Hour 17! Got a good chunk of this done and we read part of Prometheus Bound aloud in valley girl / British? accents. The further we deteriorate the more fun it gets :) probably gonna read some fabric now but I also am REALLY enjoying this so you may get more of an update later.

They’re threatening to do a slut read aloud now. God help me.

Hour 9! So far, this is very interesting and I appreciate that many different disabilities are mentioned, however some are certainly more examined than others. It’s given me some great book recs about ASL and deafness. There’s also information on common disability tropes and their negative impact, as well as positive depictions. As a film major, these analyses are super helpful for critiquing and creating media.

Hour 5. I had a two hour D&D session, dramatic reading of the turkey scene in Red, White, and Royal Blue, multiple group therapy sessions and an hour long discussion on trigger warnings. So less reading, more talking.

Hour 1! Lots of talking, so I didn’t get far but that’ll calm down soon. Also I woke up at 5:30 am, 1.5 hours before I should have woken up so… I may not make it all 24 hours. We’ll see!

Not much progress today, but I just wanted to update because tomorrow I will be *attempting* a 24 hour reading challenge with friends. I will update every two, maybe three hours for y’all (but also for me). Gonna need some miracle to make it all 24 hours, but hopefully this knocks a couple books off my TBR!

Was not expecting my entire religious experience to be expressed in a page and a half. Still recovering.

In other news, the whole quotation marks thing I’ve been preaching was wrong. She uses quotation marks for everybody when writing in present tense and none when writing in past tense. Nothing to do with gender. Oops.

I feeling like I’m flying through this — when compared to books I’ve read in the past few years, at least. As a kid, this would’ve been easy. Anyways, woohoo!! 💪

So, previously, only men had quotation marks around their dialogue, but after *the arrangement,* the Commander no longer does. And, in Offred’s words, “He was no longer a thing to me.” Coincidence? I think not!

I just started reading during downtime, but it’s pretty good so far. It’s a requirement for my writing course but I think I would read it anyways - just not pay $20 something dollars to my college bookstore for it. So yay public libraries!

I often get bored of books with a lot of description but this has me hooked. I genuinely don’t know where the plot’s going (or if there will be much of a plot) but either way I’m excited to find out.
And I just noticed that only the men get quotation marks when they’re speaking. I don’t have the words to describe what that means right now but it’s important, thematic, etc, etc…

It was insightful but calm until chapter 11, dear lord. I don’t know what I was expecting, but certainly not that.
