Starting with chapter 3 aka “Proteus” I started using bloomsandbarnacles.com to look up explanations for a lot of Stephen’s thoughts. The author of that site did a great job breaking things down quite literally paragraph by paragraph which is the only way I got through this part

Having to read the chapter summaries because the stream of consciousness writing doesn’t make sense is reminding me of reading Quentin’s chapter in Sound and the Fury and I feel like in associating the two together now. Stephen and Quentin would be great friends

reading the critique of American society on every page going “omg so true”

Chapter 11 is so boring that I started rubbing my eyes and then mascara got on my fingers and then I touched the book and smeared mascara on the page

This is taking me a long time because I’ll read some quote from Lord Henry and go hmmmm ??? oh !

The footnotes and random asides are giving George Eliot without the charm of reading a classic English novel so we’ll see how long I can tolerate this
