the magic in this book is real... i pick it up and can't put it down!!

"How could humans stand how madly beautiful the world was?"

I'm being serious when I say this book is incredibly beautiful and thought provoking at only 86 pages in. Just made it to the second part, I'll admit I don't know where the book intends to go, all I know is it's beautifully surreal and speculative and I love it.

"Nothing so pure deserves the hell of immortality."

I'm hooked.

Hm.

I mean it's fun to read and for plenty of people (rightfully so) that's enough, but I feel like the exposition (or really what little and insanely fast-paced plus lacking exposition there was) is almost irrelevant?

The motive is his wife... sort of? But motive for what? What's the end goal here? Infiltrating this hierarchical group and then... doing what? 320 pages in and I still can't tell what the point is...

Based on community reviews I should be getting into this by now but... can't say I am.

Plot is developing at least? Sorta?

Dislike Darrow a bit because truthfully he's sort of boring.

The comparison to the Hunger Games must be for the rumored arena style thing that Brown has in this because Darrow does not at all compare to Katniss. She was a realistic teenaged character.

~300 pages left to change my mind...

Okay going to be honest this book is falling into that common sci-fi critique of "here have one billion different made up concepts and terms that make sense for me, the protagonist, but leave you, the reader, completely lost" and then not explaining it.

To be fair, I'm 19 pages in but like... admittedly I don't have high hopes. Concerned about the way female characters are going to be written in this fr...

Jasmine's side of the story is more realistic, in my opinion, than Chelsea's. Chelsea tends to get a bit irritating, especially when she eggs on an argument about God with her mom (who was totally fine with Chelsea having her own beliefs/own God). Definitely a hard part to read.
