The Safari short story is genuinely perfect. This is probably my fifth time reading it and every time it’s just magic. Hands down the best use of third person omniscient I’ve seen, and just a stunning understanding of ego and experience and growing up. I love it so dearly: my favorite section of my favorite book

Loving this so far but it is a sight more grisly than a lot of other Conroy stuff

My Year of Conroy continues. This is such a nice antidote for my homesickness, as well as a good way to pass the time on the subway. I like Will McLean a lot so far, though he seems to be more of a blank canvas than a lot of other Conroy protagonists. I won’t hold it against him just yet, though.

Likely will finish this tomorrow, and I’m sad but very ready to read something else. Tolkien’s really dragging this out lol

I spent a lot of yesterday and today flipping through the appendices and it’s kind of interesting but man Tolkien gets lost in the weeds so damn easily. I think in terms of overall story, LotR clears Martin’s ASOIAF (obviously; for one, ASOIAF is unfinished and seems destined to remain that way until the world is changed) but, and I acknowledge the heat of this take, Martin is a tidier lore-master than Tolkien.

I dislike Brett. But mainly because I’ve known a couple of Bretts and the only manner in which they are consistent is in how disappointing they are in the end.

Also. Ernest really called that drummer the hard R, huh? Easy for me to sit here a century later but damn, dude. I guess I thought Hemingway was way more chill than that shit hahaha I kind of hate this book! 🤪

By the time I met Tom Bombadil, I liked this book. Now I’m with Strider and I just love it. I definitely made it all the way through this one in high school, but I don’t remember any of it except the parts that are in the movie lol

Man I’m not crazy about this so far. Going from a Pat Conroy novel straight into this book feels like going vegan or something, like there is just no flavor to McCarthy’s prose here. It’s so clipped and jagged, brutally precise - maybe I’ll appreciate that on a later read but right now it’s boring me to tears. Sorry Cormac
