It has come to my attention that I mostly read female authors without even meaning to. My husband made the point that, generally, female authors are better at writing men than male authors are at writing women. Of course there are exceptions to this “rule” but I am flabbergasted by the truth of this. If anyone has any recommendations of exceptions to this, I am all ears, bring in the recs!!!!!!

I am just now beginning this and I’m bought in already by the titillating juxtaposition of our tradwife protagonist…

I finished the “Spring” section in one day… Now I am early into “Summer.”

Is nausea is a rite of passage for a Moshfegh novel? This is GROTESQUE yet compelling. The grape scene. The blood sausages. The milk? The carcasses. The peach. This is not a book to read while eating!!!!!!

My brain keeps trying to organize the Lapvona world which doesn’t follow any normal moral rules, yet violates at every turn.

“The real world looked washed out and blurry in comparison”

I am utterly immersed in Ready Player One, cannot put it down. Such a FUN read, all the while tackling hard questions of the human condition. The dystopian world of an online meta-verse, Oasis, captures so many aspects of today’s real dynamics between humans and technology that I cannot believe this came out in 2011.

Disjointed and foreboding. It sometimes feels too fragmented, but I think it may be the author’s brilliance, because I find myself paying special attention to certain words and themes. Water, insects, fear. And the vantage point of the twins as children feels most honest even though I still have no clue what the tragedy is

I wish no one had told me how much I’d like this book because as a likely subconscious motivation to rebel against all advice, I cannot seem to get into this. Even though it ticks my boxes and the plot is finally breaking down my resistance, my own vanity may keep me from finishing this.

This is a decent story line & a quick read… but wow, some of the writing just appalls me. Big fan of TJR’s other novels but this writing is not her strongest.

“I made the sweet potatoes and the green beans,” she says proudly. Something about her childlike pride reminds me of the can of snow. “Oh!” I say, “Look, Mom! Rachel and I brought spray snow.” I pull out the cans. “Awesome, right?”

I can’t get past the writing. I decided not to finish this book about 100 pages in. The writing was like a high schooler did it for a creative writing class and had to turn in a final draft that had more descriptions or big words. Do not recommend this.

I’m far too impressionable to read a book with only one side of an all-or-nothing perspective, but I’m a equally riveted by the idea of a food culture where I can understand where the food I am eating came from. I can’t decide if I’ll continue this book.

Dune Messiah is harder for me to follow than Dune was. Like Paul, I’m
having trouble stomaching the jihad, the city life and the scheming. I can’t STAND guild steersman.
In this book, a lot of the characters I loved from Dune (#1) have major flaws being revealed. Yet I still find myself rooting for that same handful of characters, even though I’m starting to dislike the positions or actions they’ve taken.

Herbert gets the reader involved in each character’s inner world, giving a broader perspective than the many characters interacting with one another have. I feel disgust for the Harkonnens, pity for Leto, understanding for Yuen’s foreshadowed betrayal, wonder at Jessica’s planning. I’m rooting for Paul with each passing page that refers to his “terrible purpose”. Suspense & action make this a page turner.

Nothing pleases me like a good exploration of family of origin. The main characters are fleshed out and lovable. This is an honest peek into how people grieve, how the grief changes things for different people. Cannot put this down. I have a feeling more twists and turns are coming before the book ends.
I also have a feeling I will soon be reading everything Ann Patchett ever wrote.

Understanding the hype of this book! I love it. It’s easy to imagine this story as real people and real events. I’m as invested in the mom’s story about Duke as her daughters are, and I am equally enjoying Lara’s day to day life on the cherry farm with her family.
